ROOM EDIT: MASTER BEDROOM

The master bedroom is a haven. A retreat. A personal space. But for many of our clients, it seems that it’s the one space in their home that is often overlooked! They typically focus on the spaces that are more public in their homes, neglecting this very important sanctuary. We can’t tell you how many times they come to us with beautiful rooms throughout their home, and yet their bedroom has been an “afterthought.”

Here at Design Bar, we deeply believe that a master bedroom needs to be considered an integral part of the home. For many, it’s a place to retreat after a long day at work, escape cranky kiddos, meditate, or relax with coffee in the morning ... so why shouldn’t it be a place that speaks to the style of the rest of the home -- that makes its occupants feel comforted and happy?

We see two varying opinions on the aesthetics of the master bedroom. Some prefer a dark, moody, cozy space, while others crave a light, bright, cheery space -- more spa-like for a “pampering vibe.” Both are appealing, but it is truly a matter of personal preference.

What’s your preference? Check out the spaces below and see what speaks to you. We will break down each one, and discuss the elements that will give you either look!

DARK & moody master bedrooms

This project has been one of our favorites thus far. These clients were among our first when we opened our doors, and they are absolutely some of the nicest people we’ve ever met -- we are so lucky! We can’t wait to get professional photos of this one, but in the meantime we couldn’t wait to share iPhone photos of their master bedroom.

We used dark grasscloth on all walls, and a complimentary dark patterned area rug fused with the owner’s unique vintage pieces. Oh, and did you notice the amazing lamps and the handmade quilt draped over the headboard? Then we added some comfy bedding (hint: our client says it's the best they’ve ever had, and we have to say ... we are hooked!), contrast pillows in a beautiful deep hand-loomed wool, and a little touch of green. Voila! A very cozy, moody room. We love it, and most importantly, so do they!

  • D|B tip: your master bedroom should be very personal, so we always recommend infusing your treasures and mementos to make it “yours” and not just another pretty bedroom.

A cozy reading nook is always a plus in a bedroom -- and with those views, who wouldn’t want to curl up with a good book here? Notice the amazing linen drapes -- so dramatic, and a beautiful frame for the landscape beyond. Drapes make every room feel cozier. We highly recommend them if you want this vibe!

  • D|B tip: don’t forget a beautiful scented diffuser or candle for your nightstand. Add baskets for texture; they’re great catchalls for things like your yoga mat, hats and scarves for when you’re on your way out the door!

LIGHT & BRIGHT Master bedrooms

Okay, so option 2 is for those who want to walk into their bedroom after a long day and just feel “lifted” and greeted with some cheer. Lots of white, mixed with colorful pillows on the bed; add a statement wallpaper and you have an eclectic mix of patterns that is sure to melt any daily stress away.

We are currently loving the mix of blues and whites in these photos from another D|B project. And, our header photo is our co-founder Anne’s master bedroom! Check back to see more amazing photos of her full home renovation.

  • D|B tip: don’t forget task lighting. Wall mounted reading lights are so useful, and it’s ok to have those along with nightstand lamps. If you can’t add electrical boxes on your wall, there are plenty of plug-in wall mount options. Or, you could try a beautiful task table lamp.
